Does Your C-Section Scar Feel Itchy? It Can Also Be Your Nerves

Itchy scars are a common concern after cesarean. More often than more, skin is blamed for the itchiness but did you know that nerve irritation can also give you the itchy sensation.

To understand why different causes let's look at the different healing phases.


a. Healing Process: Itching is a natural part of the healing process. As your body works to repair the surgical incision, nerve endings may be affected, leading to the sensation of itchiness.

b. Scar Tissue Formation: As the scar tissue forms, it can sometimes cause irritation and itching, especially during the initial healing stages.

c. Dry Skin: The skin around the incision site may become dry due to the use of antiseptic solutions, dressings, or changes in hormone levels after childbirth.

d. Allergic Reaction: Some women might develop a mild allergic reaction to certain products used during the C-section procedure, such as adhesives, dressings, or cleaning agents.


The scar tissue can trap nerve endings which can give a sensation of itchiness. Let's look few things you can do to alleviate the itchiness if it is coming from nerves.

Massaging your scar can help free those nerve endings and improve the itching symptoms

c. Avoid Scratching: Resisting the urge to scratch the scar is crucial as it can lead to infection or slow down the healing process. Instead, gently pat or tap the area if you experience itchiness.

d. Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can rub against the scar and exacerbate the itching. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics that won't cause additional irritation.

e. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress (ice wrapped in a thin cloth) to the itchy area can provide temporary relief.

f. Over-the-Counter Remedies: Your healthcare provider may recommend over-the-counter anti-itch creams containing hydrocortisone, but it's essential to consult them before using any medication.

a. Persistent or Worsening Itching: If the itchiness doesn't improve or gets worse over time, it's essential to consult your healthcare provider.

b. Redness, Swelling, or Discharge: These symptoms could be signs of infection and require immediate medical attention.

c. Allergic Reactions: If you suspect an allergic reaction to any products used during the C-section, notify your healthcare provider immediately.
